Andy Kennedy-Derkay

About andy k-d

I’m Andy Kennedy-Derkay. I’m a professional cameraperson and “artist” based in Los Angeles, California.

I’ve worked in movies and television in camera departments for 10+ years and created an art practice of shooting instant film on a modified 1970’s studio camera to pass the often mind-numbing time film sets, giving away the subsequent prints to friends and coworkers.

Soon enough, the experimentation of image creation took on a life of its own, from filter stacking and vintage vignetters to in-camera collages with 10-12 exposures per shot.

We don’t carry images with us as we had for the first century and a half of photographic image-making, and the physical communion around the sharing of prints is something that I revere. To get to use a studio-quality camera and provide people with reflections of themselves that bring abstraction and richness into a physical image is a deeply meaningful experience and it has become an extension of my experience of the world. From documenting distros in Skid Row to photographing high-level Jiu-Jitsu, I try to take photos everywhere and leave with none.

If you’d like to work together on photos or hire me to take photos or want to buy a one-of-a-kind print, please reach out.
